Mission and Requirements from the LA IETF 6bone formation meeting

Mission:

To establish an Internet 6Bone network to foster the development testing, and deployment of IPv6. The model will be based from the experiences on the Mbone (see the 6bone Charter ).

Three initial core geographic areas will be established with focused DRIs:

• Asia (Jun Murai - Japan WIDE Consortia)
• U.S. (ISI Mike Carlton/Jon Postel)
• Europe (Jim Bound and Brian Carpenter working with contacts now)

Requirements:

WHILE-NOT-DONE-LOOP

• Initially use existing IPv6 implementions tunneling IPv6 on the Internet today, to get the 6bone started.
• Request vendors to donate or provide at a reduced cost hardware and software for IPv6 Hosts and Routers, for nodes on the 6bone eventual backbone network.
• Get some ISPs on board to assist us to route IPv6 packets between tunnel endpoints.
• Need solid spec for RIPv6 to get the initial routing underway. A public domain RIPv6 would be nice ????
• ES-NET and WIDE may be able to connect via same T1 link at SanFrancisco ISP. Need similar connection on the U.S. East Coast to Europe.
• Define AS's for IPv6 Testing Address Allocation plan (RFC 1897). We should mimic the use of International Registries during the set up of the worldwide 6bone. http://www.es.net/pub/rfcs/rfc1897.txt
• Set up DNS Primary and Secondary Servers in each Geograhphy.
• Generate a list of IPv6 public domain software pointers and vendor binary kits for Hosts and Routers.
• Need White Board/VAT running on IPv6.
• Define IPv6 only links and IPv4 tunnels in each geography so we can develop a network topology plan.
• Get volunteers to work on the 6bone effort across geographies.
• Get volunteers to port Internet applications to IPv6 existing implementations.
• Need any ISVs willing to port network applications of interest to the Internet as a prototype for the 6bone participants.
• Need Multicast Routing for IPv6 to be well defined and implemented.
• Need more volunteer DRIs to add other geographies to the 6bone on planet earth.
• Need to know what other requirements we need?
